-> 02/19 - TVT Records files for bankruptcy, fires staff
A music industry already in turmoil suffered another blow yesterday when it was announced that TVT Records would be filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and firing its staff.
Best known in the hip-hop world for such acts as Lil Jon & The Eastside Boys and the Ying Yang Twins, TVT is a five time consecutive winner of Billboard's "Best Independent Label" of the year award, most recently in 2006.
TVT was originally founded and still run by
Steve Gotlieb over 22 years ago. Gotlieb originally launched the label from his New York City apartment. The label's first success was with the popular eight-volume "Television's Greatest Hits" collection, which included famous TV theme songs.
In recent years TVT had seen its once strong hip-hop sales decline. The label suffered criticism from Lil Jon, who refused to hand in his next album, as well as Pitbull who as recently as last week encouraged fans to download his album illegally due to his displeasure with the label.
TVT was also involved in a long term dispute with Def Jam Records over material by the Cash Money Click, which included Ja Rule. TVT was originally awarded $132 million dollar in damages, but upon appeal the figure was voided to zero.

-> 02/18 - Three people shot outside of Hot Boys reunion, concert cancelled
Bad luck continues to follow the Hot Boys. After both Lil' Wayne and Juvenile were recently arrested on separate drug related arrests, the much hyped Hot Boys reunion concert was cancelled last night after three people were shot outside before the show started.
According to MTV News, Two 24-year-old women and a 26-year-old man were shot outside club Dream by an unknown gunman at around 12:57 a.m. on Monday.
According to police the three victims began running when they heard gunshots, and were taken to the hospital after being struck. None of the injuries were reported to be life threatening.
After the shooting the venue was close and the concert was immediately canceled.
While none of the Hot Boys had arrived at the venue yet, MTV News caught up with Lil' Wayne after the shooting at the birthday party for Juelz Santana. When asked about rescheduling the reunion show, Wayne responded that it is ""only a phone call away."

-> 02/15 - Sickamore resigns as Director of A & R at Atlantic Records, "Lost faith in the major label system"
Sickamore recently announced on his blog that he has resigned as the Director of A & R at Atlantic Records. Check out his entry below:
"Gave my notice last week Tuesday, though today is my final day in the office. No, I'm not leaving to take another job. Nor was I fired attempting to cover it up. I've just lost faith in the major label system. I'm a guy of integrity so the last thing I'll ever do is stay somewhere just to collect a check or say I'm "an A&R". That's just wack. Though I'll continue to consult for Atlantic, Asylum Records, Columbia Records as well as continuing to help the artists I've signed like Wynter Gordon, Slim of 112 and of course Saigon.
People who know me know I'm very passionate about my career. I started two businesses (record store in 2002 and The Famous Firm b/k/a I Can Make You Famous) before I had this job. I didn't take this position for the money. When Hip Hop first mentioned it to me in December 2005, I was hesitant. My lawyer laughed when I told her about it: "You're going to get a job?!?!?! You make more money on your own! Atlantic is about to fold! You're crazy!". But I knew the experience would be vital for my career growth. So I took it. I told myself "give it at least two years." That was February 2006.
I really enjoyed my A&R family at Atlantic. Craig, Gee, Jean, Brian, Darrale, Mike, Marsha, Walter, Dara, Lanre, Andrew, Kels, Aaron, Gina and Damon are all like brothers and sisters to me. Though Hip Hop leaving within the first couple months was tough, they made it a smooth transition for me. I had signing power and the freedom to roam all across the country in my search for finding new talent. My frustration came when it was time to put the music out (i.e. The Greatest Story Never Told). I'm not going to sign talented people to a label and have them sit. I rather bet on myself and get them hot in the streets.
If most people were in my position, they'd just ride it out. I've gotten all kind of advice from "Just take the checks and do your own shit anyway" to "Just stop coming in the office until they stop paying you" or my favorite "Do the bear minimum so they don't bother you". But I'm an idealist and believe this is the main problem in the music business today. That train of thought keeps great artists unsigned and the wrong people in the position of power. One of my friends jokes "You're keeping it real. But this is when keeping it real goes wrong." We'll see if he's right. But you only live once. I'm not going to waste anyone's time in a place where I'm not productive. I want to win!
As I said before, I'm not going to take another job. Atlantic was my first gig and probably going to be my last. I'll only work as a company through The Famous Firm. We represent and develop talent at The Firm. Yeah we rep singers and rappers but specialize in non traditional talent like athletes, photographers, writers, graphic designers, clothing lines, studio engineers, stylist etc. We can help develop and represent anyone with talent. We use our in house non traditional talent to help develop new talent. It's all about talent!
I'm a firm believer (no pun intended) in the idea of "you can't do new things with old people". That's why I'm a part of a 10 person operation at The Firm with the average age being 22. Shout out to Sade, Eli, Sterling, Mike, Michael, Nina, Jay, Pesos and Dan. Everyone is young, hungry and learning how to be entrepreneurs. I have a goal at the Firm, to make this everyone's last "job". I want my team to leave running their own profitable business, breeding a new generation of entrepreneurs.
Lastly, I want to thank Atlantic for the opportunity, grooming and experience. I wouldn't be able to help change the future of the entertainment business without it. I'm lucky to be able to depart on such great terms. Everyone was very understanding and supportive of this decision. I'm also excited for certain people to stop calling/e-mailing me under the pretense of me being "an A&R" rather than what I can really do. I want people to fuck with me and the Firm for us, not because we're tied to a major.

-> 02/15 - Prodigy denies hospitalization report
Despite reports the past few days, Prodigy vehemently denies he was hospitalized in New York earlier this week, according to Contactmusic.com.
"Who cares what they say, they say a lot. Spell/pronounce my name right when it's time... I did (concert dates in) Connecticut twice in a row, B.B. King's in New York, then Boston, Albany and New Hampshire," said Prodigy. "So I don't know why they wanna say I'm sick in the hospital. I'm very good, getting that show bread."
A rep for Prodigy also denies the report. Prodigy was granted a second medical exception this week, delaying that start of his three-and-a-half year prison sentance for a second time.

-> 02/15 - Mother of assaulted child releases statement regarding Tony Yayo
Cynthia Reed, the mother of the young boy involved in an altercation Tony Yayo and his associate Lawell Fletcher, has released a statement after criminal charges were dropped against Yayo, but not harassment charges. Yayo will do 60 days of community service for his role in the dispute. Reed stated:
"As much as Marvin Bernard tried to wiggle his way out of his role in assaulting my son, who is a minor, he had to accept responsibility to accept a plea deal. He couldn't hide behind 50 cent, G-unit, Violator Management or his co-defendant. This malicious crime against a child is despicable and any industry sponsor or company that supports individuals like Tony Yayo should remove themselves from a relationship with him and his affiliated entities. Crimes against children should never be legitimized just because a person is an entertainer. A public apology is appropriate at this time, not only from Tony Yayo but from 50 cent for denying this event ever happened— as if my son was lying when all along they knew this assault had taken place."

-> 02/14 - Child assault charges against Tony Yayo dropped
G-Unit's Tony Yayo was cleared of all charges today relating to the assault of the 16-year-old son of Czar Entertainment CEO Jimmy "Henchman" Rosemond.
The ruling was made in Manhattan Criminal Court this morning. Yayo's attorney Scott Leemon issued the following statement:
"I am pleased to announce that as of this morning, Tony Yayo is no longer facing any criminal charges relating to the incident that occurred last March," he said. "First, I would like to thank the District Attorney's office, who after further investigation, agreed with us that Tony Yayo should not be subject to any criminal liability for this incident."
"As I told you from the beginning, Tony Yayo did not hit anyone and would never do anything to harm a child," Leemon added.
Yayo was charged in March, 2007 of assault, harassment and endangering the welfare of a child for allegedly smacking then 14-year-old James Rosemond on the street in Manhattan.
However in a surprising turn of events on January 10, co-defendant Lowell Fletcher admitted to slapping the boy, saying Yayo actually had tried to restrain him.

-> 02/14 - T.I busy working on new album "Paper Trail"
Despite being under house arrest while he awaits trial on gun possession charges, T.I says he has recorded at least 50 songs for his sixth album, "Paper Trail", according to MTV News.
"It's a lot of bullsh-- out right now," T.I told MTV via phone. "I'm not gonna front. I feel it's definitely about time for somebody to come back out and kick this thing back in gear. The rotation is suffering right now. I intend to do something about it. It's just a matter of when."
T.I stressed that one record in particular, "Let My Beat Pound," will definitely make the album.
"That's gonna be a big record," Tip said. "It's a different record. It's a record I approached differently, and it don't sound like a typical T.I. record. It's basically about when you got your first car, one of the first things was to make sure your [sound] system was right. The love for the boomin' system. It has the sentiments of LL Cool J's 'Boomin' System,' but it kind of sounds like a Sir Mix-A-Lot [song]. It's kinda got the mood and tempo of 'Posse on Broadway,' but it's outta here."

-> 02/13 - Jay-Z says 'Everything is sweet' with him and L.A Reid, discusses future
There is absolutely no animosity between himself, L.A Reid and Def Jam, Jay-Z recently told MTV at the Grammy Awards.
"It wasn't a hostile thing," he explained Sunday night. "I was with L.A. last night. We still gonna continue to work on [projects], just not [with me] as the president of Def Jam. But everything is sweet."
With rumors swirling about many possible business ventures coming, Jay responded by saying:
"I got so many different options. I wanna continue to push the envelope, represent the culture well. Make the people proud. The next thing is gonna involve a little bit of everything. It has to involve music, 'cause I love music. But I have so many other skills as an entrepreneur I can add to that," he continued. "Even with the decline in CD sales, music [consumption] is at an all-time high. ... People still love music as much as ever. I'm trying to help other artists figure that out so you can make beautiful music and you don't have to pay your bills with your CDs. You're making money in so many other places. -> 02/12 - Supergroup EMC set to release "The Show" digitally Feb. 26th, CD March 25th
Hip-hop's latest 'supergroup' comprised of legendary Juice Crew member Masta Ace, Punchline & Wordsworth, and Stricklin, known collectively as EMC, are set to release their debut album "The Show" digitally on February 26th. The CD will hit stores a month later on March 25th.
"The Show" will be released on M3 Records and distributed by Traffic Entertainment.
The foursome became extremely close while touring together in 2001, and their fans recognized the chemistry onstage right away.
"The group idea was a natural progression of the relationships we all made from being on the road together," says Ace. "It's not just about the music with us, we are pretty much like brothers."
The release of their highly acclaimed single "E.M.C" in 2007 set the stage for "The Show." The album features appearances from Sean Price, Little Brother, Ladybug Mecca (of Digable Planets) and Money Harm (of Product G & B), with production from The Are, Ayatollah, Nicolay, Koolade, Quicy Tones, Frequency, and J.
"EMC is a movement and hip-hop should get ready for something really special," says Stricklin. "It's about to be a problem!"

-> 02/12 - Jim Jones discusses Jay-Z, Cam'Ron
Jim Jones recently shared his thoughts on Jay-Z and Cam'Ron in the latest issue of Complex.
On Jay-Z:
I've sold more records than most of the major artists this year. Jay-Z just barely made platinum by the skin of his teeth on that American Gangster, and if you ain't go platinum you're definitely not making any money. I don't know why you're renegotiating, you haven't even recouped…..You know why I'm pissed off at him [Jay-Z]? He was my favorite rapper and then he just went out like a dud. He had a chance to do the unthinkable and then he did the unthinkable. Where I'm from, loyalty is everything, above and beyond everything. When you violate that, it fucks everything up. Especially when you were the hustler's poster child and you chose to become a corporate stepchild. That don't make sense when you're all black-owned. I took an executive position because I didn't know the game, I took it to learn both sides of the game; there's a difference.
Complex: Did he (Cam) mention anything to you about going on stage with 50?
Jim Jones: Jones: He can't tell me what I can do. I'm a grown man, I'm a boss of this shit, what I do for my own career and what I do for publicity is what I do. I always have my own edge, and there's a method to my madness. It works for me and it works for us at the end of the day. I got a song with Game right now, so nobody can tell me what the fuck to do, and when to do it. I do what the fuck I want to do if it makes sense for me, and where I'm goin'. As long as it's not going to taint the brand, you can't tell me shit.

-> 02/09 - Dr. Dre requests court to see Death Row Documents
Dr. Dre filed papers in U.S. Bankruptcy Court on Tuesday in Los Angeles, requesting documents from Death Row Records to determine how much the label owes him in unpaid royalties, The Associated Press is reporting.
Dre has already tried to sue Death Row several times in various lawsuits. Last month, a California district court agreed to hear his appeal of the bankruptcy court's dismissal of one of those suits.
The former Death Row artist is Citing rule 2004 of the U.S Bankruptcy Code, which can allow a bankruptcy judge to force a company to turn over documents related to their assets, liabilities and financial affairs.
Dre is asking the court to make Death Row hand over the documents by February 29, and to order a company representative to be available for deposition on March 7.
The dispute centers around Dr. Dre's "The Chronic" album, which Dre now claims he should be the rightful owner of after Death Row filed for Chapter 11 protection in April 2006.

While rumors of starting a new label fly, one thing is certain, Jay-Z is getting into Madison Avenue advertising. The New York Times reports Jay is joining forces with Steve Stoute to open Translation Advertising, an ad agency aiming to help marketers reach mulitcultural consumers.
The agency will become a part of Translation Consultation and Brand Imaging, who's client list has included General Motors, Hewlett-Packard, McDonald's and Reebok.
"You know his story," Mr. Stoute said of his new partner, who grew up in the Marcy Projects in Brooklyn. "He came from nothing and turned it into something before our eyes."
"As an artist, you make music," Jay-Z said. "And if you see people who don't know how to market your music, you get involved in it."
Jay-Z went on to ad that some companies just don't know how to target different cultures with their ads.
"There are people who don't understand the culture," Jay-Z said, citing as an example a commercial for a wireless carrier "that shows guys break-dancing in the phone store."
"It's just not something we do," he added.
"We go into the stores and want the same thing as everyone else," Jay-Z said, adding: "We may care about the style of the phone a little bit more, but we want our phone to work. We care about the functionality."

-> 02/08 - Kidz in the Hall update
Following their successful debut record, School Was My Hustle, released on October 31, 2006, the duo teamed up with legendary Mix Tape DJ Mick Boogie, to release Detention, a digital-only LP, in late 2007.
The In Crowd is entirely produced by Kidz In The Hall's Double-O and will feature some of the most relevant MC's in the game today. Though Kidz In The Hall's debut, School Was My Hustle, was universally hailed, Naledge and Double-O have set much loftier standards for themselves with its proper follow-up, The In Crowd, as Double-O states "fans can expect to hear a tremendous growth with The In Crowd. Our debut was a stepping stone in our movement. The In Crowd is a masterpiece and a concise reflection of our sound, as it's a bolder and bigger sounding album made for huge shows and cigarette lighters. We have taken our experiences and our year of traveling and performing and morphed it into a true musical experience with some of the best rappers and musicians around---the true In Crowd."
Naledge takes things a step further asserting "The In Crowd is going to solidify us as the best new group in Hip-Hop. Our new album is the re-definition of the Kidz In the Hall sound and our experimentation with artist collaboration. The first album was a lot rawer and showed our potential for greatness, but The In Crowd is our greatness coming to fruition. We went out of our way to create an album that has something for everyone and is air-tight from beginning to end. This is a definite classic for the Hip-Hop lover."
Kidz In The Hall's surging success has even caught the eye of Presidential Candidate Barack Obama, who has featured their hit song, "Work to Do" in his campaign effort. The song has been posted on Barack Obama's Website as well.
Kidz In The Hall will also be touring in a town near you. Check for them at this years' SXSW Music Conference in Austin, Texas and at the Winter Music Conference in Miami, Florida. They will also be joining Duck Down Record's Roster of Artists for a US Summer tour that will touch down in over 35 major cities. Keep an eye open for Kidz In The Hall's upcoming video for "Driving Down The Block" (The Low End Theory), directed by Rik Cordero (Jay-Z's Blue Diamond Trailer director) and the group's second single from The In Crowd "Lucifer's Joyride".

-> 02/07 - Billy Danze confirms that M.O.P. is in the process of leaving G-Unit
Billy Danze of M.O.P. spoke to HipHopGame over their current standing with G-Unit Records.
"It's not like we're moving away from G-Unit on bad terms," Billy Danze told HipHopGame. "What happened is that Laze (M.O.P.'s manager) and 50 had a conversation. This was before I even started doing the Heve Medal project and the Behind Gates project, which is my solo record. We've been over there three years and we haven't put a record out. We owe it to our fans to put a record out. There's no bad terms between M.O.P. and G-Unit. Nothing, nothing is a problem or whatever. It's just that we have to make sure everything is good. This is business. At this point, there shouldn't even be a record deal. We should have a joint venture somewhere. We're just going to go out there and try to get some shit popping. Hopefully we'll still get to work with these guys and everything will be cool. As far as I know there's not no issues."

-> 02/06 - Rumor Mill-Lil' Wayne going to rehab? Ex-employees complain of Vegas 40/40 Club practices
LIL' WAYNE TO REHAB?
Fresh off of his second drug related arrest in recent months, Mediatakout.com is reporting that Lil' Wayne is planning to enter drug rehab.
According to the website, a former Wayne entourage member says the rapper is currently looking for a treatment center.
"Wayne can't live without [marijuana] ... he has some [criminal] trials coming up, so he's trying to get help," the insider said.
40/40 VEGAS FACING PROBLEMS
Ever since Jay-Z opened his newest 40/40 Club location in Las Vegas, the club has dealt with an array of problems.
First up was a frantic effort to get the proper licenses to open in time for New Years Eve. The club initially failed inspection.
Now reports are surfacing that since the opening, at least 100 employees of the club have been fired, and only two of the original ten managers remain, according to Lasvegasweekly.com.
Former employees are claiming the foul business practices have included mid-shift termination without investigation, threats, degrading treatment, foul language directed at staff and more. Bartenders have also complained of a "no comp" policy, leaving them responsible for any spillage of drinks or breakage.
Hovever club manager Ramon Mata refutes the claims.
"As with all new businesses, you find out in your first few days of operations what staffing levels are needed," he said. "We adjusted accordingly and followed all rules and regulations in terms of employees that were let go."

-> 02/05 - 50 Cent denies throwing Paris Hilton off stage, addresses steroid and drug rumors
Rumors spread over the weekend that 50 Cent kicked Paris Hilton off stage, "shouting get the f--- off the stage," at one of his Super Bowl performances, in which Hilton was celebrating her birthday.
In an interview with MTV, Whoo Kid denied the incident ever happened.
"It's no way we would kick Paris Hilton off the stage on her birthday," Whoo Kid said. "We ain't that heartless. I know 50 hates Ja Rule and Fat Joe, but he ain't that heartless to throw Paris Hilton ... off the stage. ... Somebody called me and asked me if Paris got kicked off. I was like, 'Huh?' She was dancing the whole time. She was having a good time. We hung with her afterwards. ... We kick her off her own stage and she's hanging with us? I guess people wanna hear, '50 threw Paris Hilton off the stage.'"
Whoo Kid went onto say that the video of the supposed incident was actually from Sundance Film Festival, not Super Bowl Weekend, and that it was a security guard that got the boot from the stage.
"Paris was there too," Whoo Kid explained. "She was at the front of the stage also. But nah, we kicked a security n---a off. That's some security guy that kept jumping on the stage, picking sh-- up off the stage, pushing people back while we're performing. This di--head, we didn't even know him. Either he's security or works for the club, he keeps getting on the stage. ... But the video looks so generic, you can't tell. He got on the stage three, four times while we were performing. 50 got so pissed off, he said, 'Get the f--- off my stage.' Then I played 'Wanksta.' The guys was acting like a di---head."
50 also went on to discuss the steroid rumors surrounding him, and a video from Croatia of himself and members of G-Unit in which people claimed they were snorting cocaine.
"I'm in Croatia sniffing cocaine, did you hear?" he added sarcastically about a recent international headline. "I deal with this so often it doesn't make sense in me responding. Just like they go, 'Hip-Hop Scandals: Steroids.' The sh-- lasts for two days. Why? They put 50 Cent, who's the hottest [artist] in rap. They picked Mary J. Blige, who's the hottest [artist] in R&B. Tyler Perry, who's hot as hell in Hollywood right now. Timbaland, one of the hottest producers, and Wyclef, who's international, worldwide. Everybody they picked is somebody who has an international draw. You've seen all kinds of negative press on me that wasn't effective, that came and went because people know 'that ain't him.' "

-> 02/04 - Cough syrup and sleep apnea the cause of Pimp C's death
A combination of drinking cough syrup and a pre-existing sleep apnea condition were the cause of death for UGK legend Pimp C aka Chad Butler, the Los Angeles Coroner said today.
C, who was found in bed at the Mondrian Hotel in West Hollywood, CA, on December 4th.
The report listed the condition of his body as "decomposed" and also noted that C had a history of sleep apnea. The official cause of death was determined to be "due to promethazine/codeine effects and other unestablished factors," said Ed Winter, assistant chief of the coroner's office.
"Sleep apnea, you stop breathing," Winter said. "Coupled with a medication that suppresses your respiratory abilities, you end up with an accidental death."
"We found a large amount of prescription cough medicine in the bedroom," Winter said.
Things were finally starting to go quite well for C, who spent four years in prison and was released in 2005.
"Chad was finally seeing the results of the years of love and labor that he and Bun B have put in over the years, culminating in the tremendous success of their album, 'Underground Kingz,'" C's manager Rick Martin said.
"Chad was set to soar with not only a new solo deal on Jive Records, but a lucrative publishing deal, a new satellite radio show, several group projects and a national cologne endorsement. Chad had everything to live for," Martin added.

-> 02/04 - Fat Joe fires back at 50 Cent
In a recent interview with Complex.com, Fat Joe fired back at 50 Cent in their on-going back and forth feud.
"He's got shot by people who he knows who they are, and he doesn't do nothing about it. He sees Ja Rule [another enemy], little Ja Rule, and he never even fought him one on one. And he's going to come [bleep] with Fat Joe? Are you serious? He still don't leave his house."
50 recently dissed Joe on the track "I'm Leavin'."

-> 02/04 - Despite rumors, Swizz Beatz says new Eve, Cassidy albums aren't dead
Rumors have swirled around Eve's new album being scrapped after she failed to follow up her hit "Tambourine" with anything of note. The same can be said for Cassidy, who has been battling rumors of being dropped after " B.A.R.S.: The Barry Adrian Reese Story" came and went with little impact.
Swizz Beatz however says not so fast, according to MTV News.
"It ain't over until it's out," he said. "Everybody wants the best for her (Eve). We just regrouping and starting back."
"It wasn't too many follow-ups that can follow up after 'Tambourine,' just like there wasn't too many follow-ups that can come after 'My Drink N' My 2 Step,' " Swizz continued. "You get those type of records ... I'm sorry to make those type of records, but sh--, they're hard to follow up.
"I'mma get back to doing the [whole] album thing," he added. "It eliminates the problem of what we go through. I let the artist use who they wanna use, this and that, it's crazy. The following up [to the songs I produce], sh-- becomes hard. It's a formula and sound the people are looking for and want. You gotta stay in a zone. If I make 'Drink and 2 Step,' the next three beats I make will be not the same, but [I will make] the same vibe, where it's not too far off, where you can groove. When you get all these different producers, it messes up the formula."

-> 02/04 - Young Buck says he has no communication with G-Unit
On the heels of announcing on stage with Lil' Wayne that he would be returning to Cash Money Records, as well as starting his own imprint through Sony/RED, Young Buck recently discussed his dissolving relationship with G-Unit on a Phoenix radio station.
"I've been loyal….and its hard to be down with somebody when there's no communication….It makes me feel like 'what's going on?' There's a video, everybody's there, and there's no Buck. Or you see your man moving overseas, on tour with the camp, with G-unit. Or you go to Thisis50.com and you see G-unit pictures is there, without Buck's face…and then there's no communication so I don't really understand why…"

-> 02/01 - Lil' Wayne talks Carter III
In his first interview since his drug and weapons arrest in Arizona, Lil' Wayne spoke with Billboard.com about the much awaited "Tha Carter III."
"It's one of those albums people are really waiting on, so I made it so that whatever is on it will stick with you forever," Wayne told Billboard of the project. "I'm taking my time with it. And I'm giving artists I respect and people I want to do songs with -- not songs the label fixed -- an opportunity to collaborate."
"I think this album is going to be one of my best albums," he continues. "I'm a true perfectionist. I might have to work out a deal with Universal to shoot a video to for all these songs, that's how crazy they all are. Every one of them is a movie."
When asked about his recent arrest Wayne simply answered "I've got nothing to say about that."
