-> 01/16 - Bow Wow denies spitting on Chris Brown
With rumors swirling of another backstage tantrum in which Bow Wow spit on tour-mate Chris Brown, the young rapper quickly denied the story, according to MTV.
Man, listen, I just got off the phone with Chris. My mom called me and told me about the rumor. I called him and told him, and he started laughing. We was dying [with laughter]," Bow said.
"Anybody who knows me or anybody who's been around me knows I'm not that kind of person," he continued. "I [felt bad] for New York [reality-TV star Tiffany Pollard] when she got spit on during 'Flavor of Love.' A wise man once taught me, the most vicious thing you can do is spit on somebody. It's just a rumor. It's a big rumor. I would never do that. That's not being a man, that's a sissy act."
Brown was unavailable for comment, but Bow Wow had plenty more to say on the topic.
"In the business we're in, we are professionals," he explained. "We don't get paid big money for nothing. I was in front of 20,000 people in Dallas. I said, 'Hey y'all, we got a blown speaker, and I'm not gonna let that stop me.' Me going crazy and spitting on Chris, that's absurd. Chris is like my brother. He has the utmost respect for me. ... He looks up to me. That's my dude to the end."
"We're selling out every major arena," Bow continued. "[Jealous] people want to see me and Chris bump heads, but it's not gonna happen. I only got five friends in the industry. Chris is definitely one of them. I would never spit in somebody's face who I let sleep at my house when he comes to Atlanta or Miami. That's just not in my character. That's so far-fetched, it's stupid. Me and Chris have been on tour since the last week of November. We've never fought. What are they gonna say next?"

Tenants at the Sedgwick Avenue building learned last year that current landlord no longer wanted to participate in the Mitchell-Lama program that has kept apartments affordable. This could lead to dramatic rent increases.

-> 01/09 - Blue Note Records releasing Droppin' Science, a collection of jazz-funk tracks sampled in hip-hop
On February 12, Blue Note Records will release Droppin' Science, a unique collection of the legendary label's classic late '60s through mid-'70s jazz-funk tracks, all of which have featured prominently as samples in some of the greatest hip hop cuts of the late '80s, '90s and beyond. Hip-hop artists ranging from Dr. Dre to the Beastie Boys and A Tribe Called Quest have sampled Blue Note grooves by such jazz greats as Lou Donaldson, Grant Green, Donald Byrd, and Lonnie Smith. All of these original Blue Note tracks have been compiled for the first time on Droppin' Science, which Blue Note will release as a 10-track CD, a 13-track digital album and vinyl LP, as well as individual ring-tunes that are based on the exact sampled loop.
Little known to most of the general public, Blue Note is home to some of the most widely used samples in the history of hip-hop. Sampling and the use of breakbeats has been the foundation of hip hop since its advent in the late '70s; yet, during the late 80s artists began looking for the first time into the world of jazz for new and creative sources of music. Blue Note's extensive catalog quickly became the go-to location for innovative groove based samples. What resulted was an explosion of classic hip hop tracks featuring Blue Note jazz. This explosion is best experienced in the music of A Tribe Called Quest, who used 4 out of the 10 tracks on Droppin' Science in numerous groundbreaking classics.
Taking the name from a cut off of Marley Marl's 1988 LP In Control Vol. 1, Blue Note's VP of A&R Eli Wolf conceived the Droppin' Science project as a way to connect what he calls the "golden age of hip hop" to the now classic jazz-funk tracks recorded for Blue Note during the late 60s through mid-70s. Selecting from over 25 Blue Note tracks, Wolf has assembled the best of the best from the Blue Note sampleography.
The list of artists both sampled and sampling includes some of the most famous names in the world of jazz and hip hop, and covers a large breadth of time. In 1992, Kool G Rap used Joe Williams' "Get out of My Life Woman" in his classic cut "Ill Street Blues;" then, nearly a decade later Jill Scott used the same sample in the song "Brotha" featured on her seminal neo-soul debut Words and Sounds: Vol 1. Landmark tracks from Brand Nubian ("Punks Jump Up to Get Beat Down"), De La Soul ("Bitties in the BK Lounge"), and Lox ("Get This $") all feature a groove from Lou Donaldson's "It's Your Thing." A Tribe Called Quest used Jack McDuff's "Oblighetto" in their smash "Scenario." As recently as 2001, Dr. Dre sampled David McCallum's "The Edge" in the infamous cut "The Next Episode" which featured Snoop Dog. The list continues, with Biggie Smalls' "One More Chance" remix and Mary J. Blige's "Everyday It Rains" featuring a sample from Lou Donaldson's "Whose Makin' Love." Blue Note's influence has even been felt in the pop world where Madonna used a Lou Donaldson sample ("It's Your Thing") in her song "I'd Rather Be Your Lover," as well as a sample of Grant Green's "Down Here on the Ground" in her song "Forbidden Love." For a full sampleography, please see below.
These innovative hip hop artists and beyond did their part to bring to light some of the gems of the Blue Note catalog. Yet, these tracks deserve to be heard in their entirety; complete with ripping Lonnie Smith organ solos and David Axelrod produced sound-scapes. Blue Note's aim is to re-introduce these classics to the public and to highlight the innovative ways in which these artists and producers utilized jazz material in their work. Droppin' Science brings these jazz tracks together for the first time in a truly distinct, soulful and funky way.

-> 01/04 - Birdman Sued For Copyright Infringement
Cash Money founder Birdman faces a federal lawsuit that accuses him of sampling other artists' songs without paying licensing fees.
The lawsuit claims the rapper owes several music publishing companies an unspecified amount of money for using copyrighted songs without permission.
The lawsuit claims that albums by Birdman and other rappers, including Lil Wayne and Big Tymers, contain copyrighted material that Cash Money Records used without licensing agreements and without paying royalties. The lawsuit doesn't name any of the copyrighted songs.
Birdman and the label made a single payment of $400,000, the lawsuit says, but have failed to provide the companies with "appropriate accounting" to show how much more money they owe.
The lawsuit, filed Oct. 29 in U.S. District Court in New Orleans, accuses the Williams brothers of breach of contract and copyright infringement and seeks unspecified damages, plus interest and attorneys' fees.
The companies named as plaintiffs are WB Music Corp., Warner-Tamerlane Publishing Corp., Cotillion Music Inc., Noontime Tunes and W.B.M. Music Corp. Warner-Chappell Music, a division of Warner Music Group, is the plaintiffs' parent company.

Meanwhile Alicia Keys "As I Am" kept on rolling, claiming the #2 spot with 193,211 this week (2,543,224 overall).

-> 01/03 - Judge postpones T.I. Hearing
T.I. will have to wait another six weeks before trying to convince a judge to throw out key evidence obtained against him in October when he was arrested on federal firearms charges.
U.S. Magistrate Alan Baverman postponed a suppression hearing, initially scheduled for Thursday, until Feb. 19.
T.I., was arrested in October for allegedly trying to buy machine guns and silencers in a parking lot.
In November, T.I.'s legal team filed court motions contending the search of Harris' vehicle on the afternoon of his arrest was illegal because it was conducted without "a warrant, consent or probable cause." As a result, "all evidence obtained in the searches and all statements as well as fruits thereof must be suppressed," the motion said.
If T.I.'s lawyers prevail in this motion, a large part of the government's case will be gutted.
T.I., who has pleaded not guilty, was released pending trial on a $3 million bond, under strict conditions that include home confinement.

-> 01/03 - Rep for R. Kelly refutes Ne-Yo's claims
A representative for R. Kelly has responded to Ne-Yo's lawsuit in which he claims he was fired from the Double Up tour because audiences liked him better, Bossip.com is reporting.
"The idea that R. Kelly had anything to do with Ne-Yo being dropped from the Double Up tour is just plain silly. As we said at the time, Ne-Yo was dropped because of a contractual dispute with the tour promoter, and in fact Ne-Yo is not suing Kelly but only the promoter. Ne-Yo may think blaming the situation on R. Kelly will improve his chances of collecting from the promoter, but if he does, he is sadly mistaken. Anyone remotely familiar with R. Kelly knows he is confident enough in his own abilities to be happy to share the stage with enormously talented people – the more talented, the better."

DMX, who already said in 2003 that he was retiring from the rap game and was leaning toward becoming a preacher, told MTV News that he will release a gospel-rap album this year.
"I [was] the first n---a to put out two albums in one year [It's Dark and Hell Is Hot and Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood in 1998], now I'm gonna hit 'em again — drop two albums on the same f---in' day, yo," X told MTV. "A double album will make mutha----as mad, because they gotta spend more money — plus it's already a long [double] album. I'm talking about a hip-hop album and a gospel album."
The double album project project will be called Walk With Me Now and You'll Fly With Me Later.
"The same title is gonna be on both albums, but on one album one part [of the title] is gonna be [highlighted]," he explained. On "the other album, the other name is gonna be [highlighted]."
-> 01/02 - Ne-Yo Sues R. Kelly Promoter Over Concert Tour Firing
R&B singer Ne-Yo sued the promoter of R. Kelly tours for firing him after two shows as the opening act for Kelly because the audience and the critics liked him better, court papers obtained today show.
Ne-Yo, real name Shaffer Smith, and Compound Touring Inc. filed the suit Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court against Georgia-based Rowe Entertainment Inc., alleging breach of contract and violation of the right of publicity.
Compound Touring and Smith are seeking unspecified damages, but the suit maintains he was to be paid $785,000 for 25 shows opening for Kelly's "Double-Up Tour" that began Nov. 14 and is still owed $735,000.
Ne Yo was allowed to perform during the Nov. 14 and 15 tour dates, then was fired prior to the scheduled Nov. 19 show, according to the suit.
"Plaintiffs ... allege ... that an unknown representative of R. Kelly urged Rowe to terminate Smith from the tour given the audience's and critics' more favorable reaction to Smith than the reaction to R. Kelly," the suit states.
Compound Touring spent "substantial monies in preparation for the tour and turned down other touring and performance opportunities for Smith in reliance on Rowe's agreement that Smith would perform on the tour," according to the suit.
